A PNG renamed to SVG is not a vector

Some free converters wrap your PNG in an SVG file: the file ends in .svg but contains the same pixels. Design Space will show it, but it cannot cut pixels, so you get a rectangle or an error.

This converter traces the PNG into outlines, so the SVG contains only paths. You can zoom in as much as you like and the edges stay sharp.

Transparent PNGs

Transparent areas are treated as white background and left out, which is what you want for a sticker or a cutout. If your PNG has a white shape on a transparent background, the white shape will be lost, so place it on a dark background first.

Screenshots and soft edges

Anti-aliased edges create in-between colors. The color reduction picks the real colors for you, but a screenshot with a blurred edge or a watermark gives rough shapes. Use the original export when you can.

Upload the SVG to Design Space

Cricut Design Space SVG

  1. Upload > Upload Image > Browse and select the SVG.
  2. Name it, save it as a Cut image and add it to the canvas.
  3. If a shape you expected is missing, check the Layers panel: it may be hidden under another layer.

Inkscape SVG

  1. Use File > Open to check that the file contains paths, not an embedded image: click it and look for nodes with the Node tool (N).

Common mistakes

  • Converting a PNG with a checkerboard background. That checkerboard is often part of the image, not transparency. It will be traced as shapes. Remove it first.
  • Counting colors from the screen. Gradients and shadows are many colors. Ask for fewer, or flatten the design.
  • Using a very small PNG. A 100 px icon looks fine on screen and rough at 100 mm. Use a bigger source.

Questions

What do I get that a free PNG to SVG converter does not give me?

The SVG is made of traced paths with one layer per color, not an embedded bitmap.

Is the file really editable?

Yes. Open it in Inkscape or Design Space and you can move, recolor and delete each shape.

How big can the PNG be?

10 MB and 40 megapixels.
